Writers Guidelines

Metroparent welcomes submissions on topics that will further our mission to entertain and inform parents and serve as southeast Wisconsin’s number one parenting resource.

Please take time to review the content on our website and in our magazine (see online archives) to understand the types of articles and the writing style we publish.

Each month covers a general theme (see below). However, we always welcome a variety of articles covering timely parenting topics and useful information. We are particularly interested in features and human interest stories using local sources. Essays are also welcome. We do not publish fiction or poetry.

In addition to the monthly magazine, Metroparent also publishes several other ancillary guides and directories, including New Baby, School Smarts, Birthday Bash, Family Resource Guide, Winter Wonder, Summer Sun and Healthy Family.

If you are writing on a seasonal topic or a particular theme, please submit two months ahead of anticipated publication.

Because of the large volume of unsolicited manuscripts, we can only reply to those we decide to publish. Space is limited, and often a non-response is no reflection on your talent. Keep submitting!

Submission: Please send via email, with the document attached as a Word file and also copied into the email. Short articles are generally 600-800 words. Features are 1100-1500 words.

Visuals: Please be prepared to provide high-resolution digital images or contact information for submitted visuals. Writers or organizations may submit photos.

Terms: Payment is issued after article is published; amount is determined by article length. It may also be repurposed for one of our ancillaries and appear online at

Ender: Please fill in the appropriate information and any additional info for the ender which will be added to the story: XXX is a freelance writer based in XXX. Include any additional information about yourself (i.e. mom/dad of 3 kids, enjoys reading, etc.)

Fact-checking/Sources: Please include a source list. This helps us immensely during the fact-checking process. We may ask you for copies of pages from books, articles or other written source material.
